Best shoe for water sports AND hiking?

I'm looking for something that can be used around the beach (kayaking) as well as for short, muddy/wet hikes (3-4 miles). It needs to be able to dry quickly.

I'm looking for something cheap, not top of the line performance. $40 max.

Best shoe for water sports AND hiking?
Because hiking is rough on the ankles and soles of feet I would suggest something a bit more beefy. The absolute best shoe would be the La Sportiva Exum River. It is a shoe designed specifically for canyoneers who are constantly in and out of the water while descending canyons that are frequently many miles long. The downside is that it costs $100.00. The upside is that is is very comfortable, great on dry trails and slickrock, and great in wet and mucky areas.

I truly don't know of anything in the $40 range that would last more than a few months and actually provide any comfort. I'd bet you could find an online sale of the shoe for $80.00 somewhere. Zappos.com currently has it for $92.00, do a search on froogle.com

Reply:I like the various nylon webbing 'hiking sandals' worn with merino wool socks. Warm (even in cold water), comfortable, quick drying, good protection, and cheap.

Pack an extra pair or two of socks, and change them when you are away from the beach. Rinse the dirty pair and let hang on your pack or something and air dry. Even if not totally dry, swap socks when they get too dirty- the dirt will cause blisters and wear the socks out.

Wigwam makes my favorite merino wool socks.
